Root Collar Excavation in Galveston County and Greater Houston

Uncovering and correcting one of the most common — and most overlooked — causes of tree decline.

What Is Root Collar Excavation?

The root collar is the area where a tree's trunk transitions into its root system — one of the most critical and most commonly buried parts of a tree's anatomy. Root collar excavation is the careful removal of excess soil, mulch, and debris from around the base of a tree to expose the root collar and identify girdling roots.

We use air spading technology for this process, which uses compressed air to safely move soil without cutting or damaging roots.

Why Root Collar Excavation Matters

When a tree's root collar is buried, the consequences accumulate slowly and are often mistaken for other problems. A buried root collar:

  • Restricts gas exchange at the base of the trunk, starving the root system
  • Creates chronically moist conditions that promote fungal decay
  • Allows girdling roots to develop undetected, constricting water and nutrient flow
  • Weakens the structural connection between trunk and root system
  • Causes gradual canopy decline often misdiagnosed as pest or disease

Signs a Tree May Need Root Collar Excavation

  • Trunk goes straight into the ground without visible flare at the base
  • Gradual canopy thinning without obvious above-ground cause
  • Bark deterioration or soft spots near the base
  • Tree was planted too deep or has had soil or mulch added around base
  • Recent grading, landscaping, or construction near the tree
  • Slow decline despite otherwise adequate care
  • Visible roots wrapping around the trunk at or below soil level

Our Excavation Process

Air Spading

Compressed air tools safely excavate soil from the root zone without cutting or tearing roots — the industry standard for root zone work.

Girdling Root Removal

Identification and careful removal of circling or girdling roots before they cause permanent vascular damage.

Root Collar Restoration

Establishing correct soil grade around the tree base with proper mulching technique to prevent recurring issues.

Root Zone Health Evaluation

Assessment of overall root health, soil structure, and compaction with recommendations for follow-up treatments.
